Marine Power Systems is seeking a simulation specialist to join our wave energy & floating wind technology development team. The successful candidate will work closely with the project lead, in-house design and simulation engineers, as well as external wave energy specialists, to provide expertise in the simulation of wave energy systems, particularly the power take-off [PTO] system, and the hydraulic subsystems.  The simulation will be predominantly in the Simulink/ WEC Sim environment, but will also include support in simplifying and implementing PTO models into Orcaflex. 

The Simulation Engineer will then interpret these results to provide information for the design and operations teams. In addition to the simulation abilities, a good understanding of optimisation methods, the use of cluster/ parallel computing, and an ability to understand and interpret mechanical systems into simulation analogs are highly desirable for this role. 

Ideally, the candidate will also have a strong grasp of wave energy converter control theory and may be required on occasion to assist with prototype testing activities and will also be responsible for occasional dissemination of the technical work at conferences, seminars, and potentially journal papers.

The candidate will be based at the MPS head office in Swansea, main responsibilities include:-

  • Creation and Development of simulation tools (primarily in Simulink and WEC-Sim) for WaveSub, WindSub and DualSub devices with a focus on the power-take-off system 
  • Working with in-house and supplier engineering teams to produce accurate simulation data suitable for use as design information
  • Support implementation of control approaches for the PTO system
  • Collaborate to create development plans for addressing research questions
  • Identify suitable resources and tools to address the research needs of the company
  • Optimisation of WaveSub, DualSub and WindSub systems and subsystems 
  • Analysis, checking, and clear reporting or presentation of results using tools such as MATLAB, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Assist in-tank scale prototype physical testing on occasion, particularly when related to PTO investigations.
  • Translation of Simulink model into a simplified Python model for running in Orcaflex (with support if required) 
  • A solution of simulation and technical problems
  • Writing technical reports
  • Occasional presentation of results in seminars or conferences 
  • Carrying out a range of design calculations and simulations

Experience required:-

Essential  

  • A strong mathematical understanding and ability to implement the understanding of wave energy hydrodynamic systems in the marine environment 
  • Degree/HNC/HND in Engineering or related discipline 
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in computational simulation
  • Strong knowledge and capability of using Simulink [and desirably WEC-Sim]
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and able to work with limited supervision
  • Good planning/organisational skills and the ability to work under challenging timescales
  • A genuine interest and passion for addressing the challenges of energy generation at sea
  • Proficient in English (both spoken and written)
  • Eligibility to live and work in the UK 
  • Valid Driving Licence for driving in the UK 
  • Ability to process data using software tools such as MATLAB and Excel 
  • Ability to work away from the main office occasionally 
  • Ability to critically analyse, clearly summarise and interpret the results of simulation work
  • Ability to work as part of both an internal/external team maintaining clear and appropriate communication 

Desirable 

  • Experience of simulating wave energy systems 
  • Working knowledge of wave energy converter control approaches 
  • Ability to code in a range of languages, particularly Python 
  • An ability to use Nemoh 
  • A strong ability to understand hydraulic and control systems 
  • Ability to use CAD systems 
  • Experience in wave tank testing
  • Experience in the renewable energy field 
  • An ability to use parallel/cluster computing
  • An ability to use optimisation approaches in simulation
