Wave Energy Project Wins Funding to Progress

Marine Power Systems (MPS) has been awarded £359,000 SMARTCymru research, development and innovation funding to design a quarter-sized scale model of wave-energy converter WaveSub.

The funding and expansion of the project is set to create eight jobs.

Dr Gareth Stockman, managing director at Marine Power Systems, said:

“We have carried out considerable research and development over the past six years to reach this critically important stage.

“It’s an exciting time for MPS and the ongoing funding support from the Welsh Government has been invaluable.

“Work is now underway on the design phase which should be completed by the end of the year – the next phase would then involve the manufacture and testing of the scale model which would mark another key milestone.”

The technology found in WaveSub is protected by a series of patents. It has been developed with the backing of the Welsh Government.
